What is Karate?

Karate is more than a contract—it is a commitment to excellence: both ours and yours. A contract is only a document. A commitment binds you to excellence for the rest of your life. Are you ready for the discipline that such a commitment calls for? We are!

Grandmaster Dr. Sam Price, my personal instructor, says, "Discipline is a special kind of love."

General George Patton wrote that "all human beings have an innate resistance to obedience. Discipline removes this resistance, and by constant repetition, makes obedience habitual and subconscious. Self respect grows directly from discipline. Compliance, cooperation, and coordination are always important, as is a commitment to doing the job well. These qualities come with discipline and pride."

"True karate is this: that in daily life one's mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility, and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice."
-- Gichin Funakoshi

KarateKarate translated either means "Chinese hand" or "Empty hand" depending on which Japanese or Chinese characters you use to write it.

Karate Go Ju Ryu Karate came about when one of Grandmaster Gichin Funakoshi's (1869-1957, founder of Shotokan) top Black Belts, Kanryu Higaonna (who headed one of the two major Karate schools in Okinawa) began to teach a 14-year old student named Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953). In 1929, Miyagi introduced what he called Go Ju Ryu to Japan. In defense, Go Ju Ryu Karate tends to be somewhat more circular, and in offense, linear. Hence the name, "Go Ju Ryu," which means hard/soft style or system. In 1930, Miyagi began to teach Go Ju Ryu to the man who would become his top student, Gogen Yamaguchi (1909-1980), who later became known as the "Cat-Man." Later, Go Ju Ryu Karate came to America by way of some of its masters and also by military personnel who earned Black Belts while stationed in Japan or Okinawa in the 1940s through the 1960s. Grandmaster Dr. Sam Price began his study of Karate in 1960 from such returning servicemen.

We teach Sam Price's Go Ju Ryu System of Karate which emphasizes an enthusiastic, positive attitude, physical conditioning, basic fundamentals of Karate, performance of multiple Katas (Click:"Kata-Floor Routines" for my article) and controlled sparring using authorized protective padding for safety's sake.

Our system emphasizes high commitment and utilizes stances, blocks, punches, kicks, strikes, evasions, takedowns, some joint manipulations and a strong offense as a good defense. I teach that "You train every day for the event you pray never occurs." But we always want to be ready in case it does.

Karate

Karate is an art of self-defense as well as a sport, which in recent decades, has proliferated worldwide. We at Marc Unger Karate emphasize biblical values and see ourselves as partnering with parents in affirming strong morals, discipline, confidence, flexibility, endurance, defense and positive goal setting for our students. That's commitment! Are you ready?
