Jimmy Alfaro
Student Of The Month August 2010

Jimmy Alfaro

Jimmy says that the best lesson he’s learned in Karate is to “Protect myself.” He also says, “Karate makes me listen and learn in school” and to, “pay attention.” Jimmy says that it’s “fun to do fight night.” That’s the word from our Student of the Month.

Jimmy Alfaro is ten years old and is going into the fourth grade at Exeter’s Rocky Hill School. He’s been at Marc Unger Karate for the past 21 months and has just attained the rank of Green Belt! Jimmy’s favorite sport is soccer. He wants to be in the military when he grows up and is interested in the US Navy.

“I am very proud of Jimmy!” remarks Fifth Degree Black Belt Instructor, David Unger. “In the last few months, he has worked very hard and has learned that he can accomplish great things. I can see Jimmy doing just that in the future.”

Chief Instructor, Marc Unger, states, “That’s what Karate is all about. We see it as a leadership/goal-setting program that brings out the best in everyone who exercises the discipline necessary to learn this art. More than just a fighting/self-defense program, Karate is great self-improvement.” And that’s what Jimmy is doing. He’s applying himself to improve himself in many areas.

Congratulations to our August 2010 Student of the Month: Jimmy Alfaro.

Student of the Month June 2010

Brian Alfaro

Brian started his Karate training one year and eight months ago. He earned his Green Belt in 1-1/2 years. Brian is age 13 and an eighth grader at Wilson school in Exeter where his favorite subject is math. Brian’s goal is to become a policeman or follow in his father, Antonio’s, footsteps and become a gold trader.

Brian’s favorite part of Karate is the sparring. His eyes light up when he talks about it. He says that Karate has helped him most with his “school work,” his “education.”

Karate has also helped Brian with goal setting and patience. At one time, Brian quit Karate for a few months. Now he is back, working hard and making up for lost time. When Brian quit, he never envisioned himself succeeding in this sport. Now, he is our most recent Student of the Month. Way to Go, Brian! If Brian can, you can! Congratulations to our June 2010 Student of the Month: Brian Alfaro.

Student Of The Month May 2010

Cristo Alfaro

From day one, it was apparent that this student had the desire to excel in Karate. Cristo has been with us of one year and seven months. It took him five months to get from White Belt to Green Belt. Then it took an additional 13 months to get from Green Belt to Purple. Cristo is now excelling as a Purple Belt. But you would expect such performance from him.

You see, Cristo is one of nine siblings—six of them are in Marc Unger Karate! His sibling Karate students range in age from 14 to 8 years old. So Cristo has to stay sharp to keep up with his family. As a second-born, Cristo is a leader of his brothers. They will have to ante up in order to follow his example of excellence.

Cristo is 12 years old and is a sixth grade student at Exeter’s Wilson Middle School where his favorite subject is math. As of now, his goal in life is to become “a soccer player.” And you guessed it, his favorite sport is soccer.

Cristo says the greatest lesson he has learned from ate is “Respect.” His favorite part of Karate is, “Fight nights.” The best lesson learned from Karate which he applies in his home? “I am listening more to my mom.” How has Karate been changing him? “I pay more attention in [school] class.”

Cristo’s proud parents, Antonio and Gorgoina, are glad he is in Karate. Cristo says, “When me and my brothers are home, we make a mess. When we are at Karate, we don’t.” Congratulations to our May 2010 Student of the Month: Cristo Alfaro.

Student Of The Month April 2010

Bennett Reser-Guerra

What’s six years old, has an irresistible smile and holds his little fist in the air in triumph? Our student of the month, Bennett Reser-Guerra!

Bennett has been training at Marc Unger Karate for three months and has already achieved his Second Degree White Belt. In addition, he is a first grade student at Lincoln school and has a Conduct Stripe on his White Belt for his excellent school grades.

Bennett’s mom, Amanda, is a teacher at Rocky Hill School and says that the biggest thing Bennett has learned is “self-confidence.” As a result, she states, “It is giving him a more competitive edge, for being so small. Now, he can compete alongside his brother.”

Bennett says he likes: “Side kicks, fighting and doing the Katas (choreographed floor routines).” He wants to be “a canine cop” when he grows up. Mom is all for that happening but, for now, his biggest improvement at home is, “He’s trying to put his stuff back where it belongs because of Karate.” Congratulations to our April 2010 Student of the Month: Bennett Reser-Guerra.

Student Of The Month March 2010

Miracle May

“Miracle has gotten so strong,” says her mom, Amy. She is becoming much more athletic and I am so proud of her.” We are too! Miracle is a 9-year old third grade home schooler affiliated with Dayspring Christian School. She is the second of five children and has a baby brother on the way. Her favorite subject is English and she loves running. That will certainly help her when she has to begin her green Belt test with a 3.5 mile run! Recently, Miracle showed her Karate class a beautiful suede and faux lamb wool purse she made with the new sewing machine she received for her birthday. She joined Marc Unger Karate 6.5 months ago and says, “I think I like the kicking. I’ve been practicing kicking really high.” Dad, David, comments, “For home schooling families like us, it takes care of the PE requirement. We love having a Christian instructor and I am personally thankful that my children (particularly my daughters) will learn self-defense.” David says, “The greatest benefit for miracle is, “Definitely physical strength {and] confidence. I love to see Miracle’s confidence soar.” Mom concludes, “It’s great to have them exercise so regularly. We also love the encouragement they receive from their teacher, Mr. Unger. He has made Karate such a positive experience and they both look forward to getting their Black Belts someday.” When asked what the most important thing is that she’s learned in Karate, she answers, “paying attention.” Why would other kids your age join Karate? Miracle says, “So they can learn to pay attention and learn to defend themselves.” Congratulations to our March 2010 Student of the Month: Miracle May.

Student of the Month February 2010

Teneil Nichols

This six-year old student pays attention! As a result, he is excelling in his beginner class and has a goal of achieving the coveted Black Belt in the future.

Teneil is a first grader at Lincoln school where his favorite subject is math. He wants to become a doctor. That is a very noble goal for someone so young but Teneil seems to have the focus and determination to do it. His favorite sport is football and he loves being a receiver. Next to football comes Karate. One of the things Teneil likes best about Karate is “learning the roundhouse kick.”

Teneil is active in his church, Exeter Baptist Church, with his grandparents, Jaun and Suzie. He says the thing he likes best about his church is “learning about God.” Good answer. His mother, Sasha works for an insurance company and his step-dad, Sammy, is a Sales Associate at Walmart.

Sasha says of Karate, “Teneil is very dedicated to it…He practices at home and enjoys it. It teaches him determination and dedication.” With that determination and dedication, Teneil is very likely to get his Black Belt and beyond. He’s also likely to become that doctor! We hope to help him do just that.

Congratulations to our February 2010 Student of the Month: Teneil Nichols.

Student Of The Month January 2010

David “The Shark” Unger

On December 21, 2009, David was promoted to the rank of Fifth Degree Black Belt!

Just as he helps people in Karate, David wants to help people in life. He is currently excited about his job at San Joaquin Medical Clinic in Exeter where he works each Monday doing massage therapy under the tutelage of Dr. Roger Rahn, a noted Chiropractor/physical therapist/massage therapist. David hopes to be able to combine the disciplines of physical therapy with massage therapy in his own future practice. The technique is to first soften up the tight and inflamed tissues and muscles before attempting to guide them gently back into place. He is a kinesiology major, completed seven semesters at College of the Sequoias and plans on going to a four-year college in the fall of 2010 to continue his education toward his goals.

David started his Karate career in April of 1992. To date, he has been training for almost 18 years. As is true of all excellent Karate instructors, David never stops learning. This year he has read some very good and very old books on Karate and what we are here to teach. And that’s what David does, he is a teacher extraordinaire!

We are proud of our January 2010 Student of the Month: David “The Shark” Unger.

Student Of The Month December 2009

Seyla “Scorpion” Martinez

Why is the pretty girl in the accompanying picture known as the “Scorpion”? She stings when she is sparring with her classmates and at tournaments!

Seyla is eight years old and has been at Marc Unger Karate 9-1/2 months. This third grade student at Crestwood Elementary School says she likes “fight nights and Kata the best.” She is very proud of her four Karate trophies and looks forward to winning more in the years ahead. Seyla also likes to play soccer and jump rope. She attends Karate with her sister, Belen, and says that when they practice together at home it is “Fun, fun, fun.”

She says her biggest lesson learned from Karate is, “Fight only if the other people are trying to hurt you.” Her mom, Sonia, is a wife and mother-of-six homemaker. Sonia says of Seyla, “She’s a little more focused now. Karate gives her confidence.” With confidence comes responsibility. As Seyla has worked herself to the top of her White Belt class, she has had opportunities to help those who know less Karate than she does. About helping others, she states, “I like it. I feel I am earning the right to teach others. It’s fun.” She’s getting ready to take her Green Belt test this month.

Seyla’s dad is SFC Rafael Martinez, a proud recruiter for the California Army National Guard for over 20 years. “The experience,” he says, “has been a good confidence builder for her.” Oh, and did we mention that her older sister, Esperanza is also a member of the Guard and is currently at Fort Jackson, SC in Boot Camp?

The Martinez family attends Exeter Baptist Church where Marc Unger (her Karate teacher) is the pastor. He’s very proud of Seyla and sees her as a future Black Belt instructor.

We are proud of our December 2009 Student of the Month: Seyla “Scorpion” Martinez.

Student Of The Month November 2009

SAMUEL DENNING

Samuel started Karate at age 10. After about a year and attaining his Blue Belt in American Kenpo, the 11-year old 5th grader from Jim Maples Academy has joined us at Marc Unger Karate and we’re glad he did. Samuel now holds a Sixth Degree White Belt and is moving up fast.

He says, “I like learning and doing the forms.” He also likes, “Learning how to defend myself against bad people.” Samuel says, [This Karate school] “is filled with a God-centered focus, Jesus is Lord!!!” His dad, Marshall, who works in Corrections, says that Samuel has “more peace.” His mom Tamsin, a homemaker, tells us that, “He seems more encouraged and excited about Karate” since joining us. Samuel also likes basketball and is very focused on what he does. Basketball season only lasts for a short time and we are able to be here for Samuel (and his little brother, Simeon) all year long. Maybe that's why they make the drive from Porterville to Exeter three times each week.

We are proud of our November 2009 Student of the Month: Samuel Denning.

Student of the Month October 2009

AUSTIN “MR. FANTASTIC” WOODS

“Because of his interest in Karate, we enrolled Austin and since then, he has become much more outgoing and self confident,” says his mom. Austin says that the most important lesson he has learned at Karate is “never use Karate on school grounds.”

Austin is a seven year second grader at Sequoia Union and attends church at Visalia Nazarene with his parents, Scott and Tesa Woods. His teachers say he is hard working and very well behaved. He is also goal-oriented, earning his Green Belt in a little over a year and currently working toward his Purple Belt. Austin says his favorite part of Karate is the Katas, the choreographed floor routines. They help with memory, perfection of technique, balance, coordination, speed, power and confidence. “Austin also likes to pay soccer and football. He enjoys riding his bike and skateboard and camping, fishing and hunting with his family” says mom. Dad tells me Austin is a good shot with his .22 s well. The biggest fish Austin ever caught (so far) is a 10” Bass.

Why do we call him “Mr. Fantastic”? You ought to see him stretch!

We look forward to seeing a Black Belt on this young man in the future! We are proud of our October 2009 Student of the Month: Austin Woods.

Student Of The Month September 2009

GLORIA TORRES

The most important lesson she says has learned at Marc Unger Karate is, “To believe in God and have respect for one another.”

Gloria Torres is a 12-year old seventh grader at Wilson Middle School and her life goal is to become a business lawyer. She has been studying Karate with us for over 3 years and 3 months and is a Purple Belt. She also participates in swimming and league soccer.

The thing Gloria likes best about Karate is, “Discipline and being able to learn how to defend myself.” She knows the value of self defense because her dad, Gilbert, is in law enforcement and her mom, Gloria, is a Registered Nurse. Gloria says, “My parents really like Marc Unger Karate because my sister, Gabby, and I get better and don’t let others push us around.”

We are proud of our September 2009 Student of the Month: Gloria Torres.

Stunent Of The Month July 2009

CALEB “BUMPER” ANDERSON

When asked why he joined Marc Unger Karate, Caleb replied, “I really wanted to and I have a friend who is a Purple Belt.” Now he says, “You need to be stronger in case someone attacks you.”

Caleb is getting ready to start third grade at Rocky Hill school of Exeter. He is goal-oriented as seen by this comment, “You get to learn different Katas [choreographed floor routines] and when you do, you get to go [get promoted] to the next belt.”

After four months of training, Caleb is a leader in his White Belt class and is getting ready to be promoted to Green Belt the next time we have a belt test. We’re all very proud of Caleb’s “can do” attitude and his desire to be learning new and more challenging material.

Caleb’s mom, Kim, says, “We put Caleb in Karate to learn self-discipline and we feel it is helping. Now, he tends to stop when we say, ‘Stop!’”

We are proud of our July 2009 Student of the Month: Caleb “Bumper” Anderson.

Student Of The Month May 2009

BELEN MARTINEZ

Belen is only six years old and her mom, Sonia, says she is in Karate “to be able to protect herself and to learn self-defense.” Belen has been a student at Marc Unger Karate for three months and has already passed four tests and is ranked as a Second Degree White Belt. Since joining Karate, Belen is “more socially outgoing. Normally, she is an introvert,” says her mom, “but now she is more able to be in group settings.”

When asked what she likes best about Karate, Belen says, “Everything!”

Belen attends Kindergarten at Crestwood School and mom says she “is an A student—a model student. Her teacher loves her.” Her Kindergarten teacher says she wishes Belen “could be cloned.”

Belen likes her Karate Katas (choreographed floor routines). She says they are,”fun because you can exercise.” Belen loves the sparring so she can practice the kicks she is learning.

Belen’s father, SFC Rafael Martinez, is a recruiter for the CA Army National Guard. Her mom, Sonia, is a “Domestic Goddess” who takes care of Seyla (8, also a Karate student at Marc Unger Karate) and Solomon (6 months) as well as Belen.

SFC Martinez says of his daughter, “She does it (practice) every day and that’s just what champions do. She walks around the house doing it.”

We are proud of our May 2009 Student of the Month: Belen Martinez.

Student Of The Month April 2009

MARILYNN BARRAZA

When she punches and kicks, she has so much snap that her fellow students roll their eyes and mouth the word, “Wow!” After 15 months of training she is “very excited” about earning her Green Belt. Her mom, Marisol, says, “Marilynn’s focus is Black Belt. She doesn’t even think of Purple or Brown Belt.”

Marilynn Barraza is nine years old and is a third grade student at Snowden Elementary School in Farmersville. Her favorite subject is cursive handwriting and her goal is to become a “singer or a chef, or both.” Her favorite sport is baseball—hardball—where she plays first base for Romero’s Giants of Farmersville. Her favorite Karate technique is a backfist/reverse punch combination. She says, “Karate teaches me how to take care of myself and how to protect people...and take care of my family.” And she keeps busy taking care of her mom and her 14-month old sister, Mishka.

Again, mom says, “Karate is a privilege and a sacrifice for me. Marilynn has changed a lot and I can see a big difference in her. The biggest change since starting Karate is her self-esteem. She is focused at what she wants. She’s more responsible. Also, her grades have improved.”

Marilynn is focused on her future in Karate as she is happy to say, “Someday, I know I am going to be a Black Belt—a Sixth Degree Black Belt.” And we believe she can and will do it—and more!

We are proud of our April 2009 Student of the Month: Marilynn Barraza.

Student Of The Month March 2009

AUSTIN "DRAGON" SMITH

He says he likes, “Fighting, sweating and punching real hard!” That means Austin Smith is in the right place at Marc Unger Karate! Maybe that attitude has helped him to become our Student of the Month for March of 2009. He says Karate helps him so, “I won’t be afraid of bullies.”

Austin has been studying Karate with us for seven months. In that time, he has earned the rank of Eighth Degree White Belt and is looking forward to his future Green Belt test.

A 5th grade student at Rocky Hill School, Austin’s favorite subject is spelling and weather. His favorite sport is football and his ultimate goal is to be a player in the NFL. Although Austin is only 11-years old, he says his Karate training has helped him to understand one of our great mottos, “No gain without pain.” Austin is learning that if he is going to be something; it is going to cost him something.

He attends church with his parents, Aaron and Cari, and his family at the Family Worship Center of Exeter. His dad, Aaron, says, “[Karate has] taught him discipline and he seems to be doing better in school. He seems to be more directed to do what he sets out to do. [Now, he is] goal oriented.

We are proud of our March 2009 Student of the Month: Austin "Dragon" Smith.

Student of the Month December 2008

MICHAEL ALFARO

“Karate has helped me in standing up for myself and being brave,” says 13-year old Michael Alfaro. Then again, as the oldest of 9 siblings, Michael has to stand up for himself every day.

Michael joined Marc Unger Karate in October 2008 and in just 6-1/2 weeks has rocketed to the rank of Sixth Degree Black Belt. His commitment to excellence is contagious as other students are beginning to realize that they can achieve just like Michael does. Michael says that one of his secrets of success is, “I’ve tried to learn my Katas and practice with my friends from Karate.” In addition, Michael stays busy teaching his brothers: Brian, Cristo, Alex and Jimmy and helps them with their practice sessions at home. All five of them train together at Marc Unger Karate. Soon, two more of their brothers will be joining.

He’s now in eighth grade, and his favorite subject at Wilson Middle School this year is science. His favorite sport is soccer and Karate comes in a strong number two. “When you are a Karate student,” Michael says, “you get to trust yourself when other people pick on you.” And Michael trusts himself to achieve his long-term goal of becoming an architect. He wants to design homes. Based on the determination and hard work ethic he demonstrates in Karate, Michael should have no problem in achieving his dreams.

Congratulations to our December 2008 Student of the Month: Michael Alfaro.

Student of the Month November 2008

NEHEMIAS "NEHEMIGHTY" FERNANDEZ

Nehemias joined us at Marc Unger Karate just three weeks before his fifth birthday. He started training on September 4, 2008 and earned his white belt in 11 days, school patch in 14 more days and graduated out of the Beginner Class in only an additional three days. Currently, he is continuing to learn his first Kata (choreographed floor routine) to earn two red stripes on his White Belt.

Nehemias attends Kindergarten at Santa Fe school of Porterville where his favorite subject is reading. His favorite sport is—you guessed it—Karate.

Nehemias’ dad is the pastor of Family International Church in both Porterville and Visalia. He has been waiting for years for Nehemias to get old enough to join Karate because he says of Pastor Marc Unger, “You are a role model for our community and you are an inspiration to us ministers. I wanted my child to have an influence in his life such as yours.”

God put a very large heart into a very small package when He made Nehemias. In just two months, this little guy has earned the sincere respect of his classmates and his instructors. He did this by his dogged determination for excellence. The Bible says, “And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Col 3:17).

Nehemias’ sister, Genesis joined Karate with him and she is 7 years old. They make a great team and it is a great blessing to see Genesis’ pride as she watches her little brother. Their dad says the kids like the activity, discipline and the Christian atmosphere and influence at Marc Unger Karate.

Nehemias’ mom, Mary Ann, is a young, retired school teacher. Why did she retire so young? To be a stay-at-home mom. Why else? Someone has to look after Nehemias, Genesis and their little brother, Jeremias (age two).

Congratulations to our November 2008 Student of the Month: Nehemias Fernandez.

Student of the Month October 2008

MICAH ZIESSLER

When Micah Ziessler first told me that he wanted to join Karate, he was about six years old. He had a lot of energy. So much that I always envisioned him with a blue shirt, red cape, and gold emblem on his chest with a lightning bolt and a capital “E” for “Energy Man.” Finally, at age 14, his parents signed him up. For two years and 10 months, Micah expended so much energy and enthusiasm learning Karate that he received his Black Belt in school-record time.

What has Karate meant to Micah? “Self-control and friendship.” He continues, "It has given me a lot of confidence…I’m learning a lot of respect for people over me: instructors, elders, pastors and teachers. It has given me a better appreciation for what people have to go through to teach.”

“My favorite thing about Karate,” he says, “is to walk around confidently and know where I stand—like I know with my faith in Christ.”

At age 21, and as he works toward Advanced Black Belt status, Micah has a word to share with those considering joining Karate: “It’s probably the best thing you can do for yourself, for others and for your parents. It’s a gift to be able to be taught the ability to defend yourself—if the time calls for it. But you also pray you never have to use it.”

For Micah, “Karate has always challenged me to dig deeper into myself. To become the best. [To do that] I’m learning you have to push hard.” And that he does!

Congratulations to our October 2008 Student of the Month: Micah Ziessler.

Student of the Month September 2008

DAVID “THE SHARK” UNGER

Quoting his dad, David says, “You train every day of your life for the event you pray will never happen.” “You walk away or run away, but if you can’t avoid the fight you fight to win and win convincingly.”

David started his Karate training with his dad, Marc Unger, in the back yard of their home in Woodlake on May 4, 1992 just 17 days after his fifth birthday. He still talks of the days when he trained with his dad, brother Daniel, and other students in the dark of night throwing reverse punches in the 34 degree air one winter. To this day, David quotes something he learned from his dad, who learned it from Grandmaster Sam Price, “No Gain without pain.”

After 5-1/2 years of hard training and competition, David became the youngest person to hold the rank of Junior Black Belt at Marc Unger Karate at age 10 years, 7-1/2 months. His record stands to this date.

David is now 21 years old and is in his seventh semester at College of the Sequoias where he has recently declared his major in Kinesiology. David has the goal of becoming a physical therapist. He is a manager at Howie and Sons Pizza of Visalia.

David had a great surprise this summer when he was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame on May 10 as “Go Ju Ryu Master of the Year.” David is an instructor at Marc Unger Karate, a highly decorated competitor and dabbles with grappling, Judo and various self-defense styles. He currently holds the rank of Fourth Degree Black Belt.

When David was about six years old, a newspaper showed a picture of him staring down an opponent in a tournament as he targeted that opponent with his trademark reverse punch. David’s stance, ready fist and the focused look on his face caused his dad, Marc Unger, to say, “Man, he looks like a shark going after red meat!” That earned David the nickname, “The Shark.” Not much has changed. David is still “The Shark” and loves to teach others how to do it right.

Congratulations to our September 2008 Student of the Month: Instructor David “The Shark” Unger.

Student of the Month August 2008

ASHLYN STEVENS

“Her self-esteem has improved, she has confidence.” That’s why Ashlyn Stevens is “excited about learning the defense moves” at Marc Unger Karate.

Ashlyn has been training in Karate for six weeks, has passed two tests, is getting ready to pass a third and is so confident that she has been named our Student of the Month for August 2008. She is in third grade at Rocky Hill School and says her favorite thing to do is to read.

Ashlyn feels the most important thing she has been taught in Karate is “learning to pay attention.” She realizes that this will help her with her schoolwork and in life in general. She states she is thankful to be learning to “defend myself.”

Dad, Marc, a construction electrician and mom, Diana, who works in nutritional health services are proud of the new confidence that is growing in their daughter. Ashlyn also has a 3-year old brother named Marc. Who knows, maybe Ashlyn’s success will influence him to join Karate when he reaches five years of age.

Congratulations to our August 2008 Student of the Month: Ashlyn Stevens.

Student Of The Month July 2008

OLIVIA TANTAU

When asked what she liked best about Karate, 8-year old Olivia Tantau said, “Being Student-of-the-Month!” Why not? In the nine weeks since Olivia came to Marc Unger Karate, her mother, Brenae, says, “It’s made her a better child. It seems like she is able to reason before she acts.” Her teachers at Rocky Hill School have noticed the difference and so has Olivia, now in third-grade. Mom says, “She wants to come to [Karate] class early every day.”

Now “she’s aware that if she has done something wrong, she takes her punishment and will apologize. This is something new for us,” says Olivia’s happy mom.

As far as Olivia’s experiences in Karate, she likes the Katas (choreographed floor routines) because she, “likes learning new things.” She also likes self-defense because, “it protects you from the bad people.”

In addition to Karate, Olivia likes to play Exeter City League sports like basketball and soccer. It helps that Karate is a year-round sport so she stays active and involved.

Her dad, Chris, is a farmer who raises plums. Her mother, Brenae, is a Registered Dental Assistant. Both have reason to be very proud of their daughter.

Olivia’s favorite family thing is to “Go out to dinner with [her] family at Big Bubba’s BBQ.” July 1, 2008 is the night Olivia was completely surprised by being awarded Student-of-the-Month. Maybe she went to Big Bubba’s. Or maybe she’ll go soon.

Congratulations to our July 2008 Student of the Month: Olivia Tantau.

Student Of The Month June 2008

BEN SERTICH

The most important thing I’ve learned so far in Karate is, “Discipline: It means obeying and following Jesus.” That’s what 8-year old Ben Sertich has to say about his training at Marc Unger Karate. Ben is going into 3rd grade at Outside Creek School where his favorite subject is math.

Ben’s mom, Meredith, states, “Ben is the youngest of four and really needed something of his own. Karate was it. I can see the pride he has in achieving something different from his siblings.” She describes her son’s biggest change: “I see a little more maturity in Ben due to the discipline of Karate.”

Ben joined Marc Unger Karate in February, 2008 “Because if someone attacked me, I would know how to attack them [in self-defense] and protect myself.” Ben’s favorite thing about Karate is: “Mostly fighting…because it’s okay to punch people [in supervised competition] and if they punch you, you’ll be fine.”

Ben is an achiever who is learning how to set small, reasonable goals in order to achieve larger, prized goals. Currently, Ben is our highest ranking White Belt and mom says: "Ben has an eagerness to get going on his Green Belt.” Ben has aspirations of using his goal-setting skills in achieving his life goal of being a doctor. We believe he can do it and are honored to be here to help.

Congratulations to our June 2008 Student of the Month: Ben “Big Ben” Sertich.

Student Of The Month May 2008

ALISA FLORES

“I don’t want to become a victim. If necessary, I would do what I have to do.” So says the 12-year old Alisa Flores. She says the most important lesson she has learned at Marc Unger Karate over the past 8-1/2 months is, “How to defend myself.”

Alisa is a sixth grade student at Outside Creek School where she plays basketball, some soccer and some softball. Her goal in life is to either become a fourth grade teacher of a pediatrician. She believes that she has what it takes to handle those kinds of academics. Alisa earned her Green Belt on April 22, 2008 after recuperating from a bad ankle sprain incurred while running on the track outside of her Karate training. As for her Karate goals, Alisa realizes it may take three to four more years to achieve her Black Belt. She says, “I feel that it would be challenging but worth it.”

As for her feelings about her Karate training, Alisa states, “I like to do all the moves (the Katas: choreographed floor routines), kind of like memorize…I like doing all the fighting, that really helped too.

Alisa is consistent, goal-oriented, tenacious, sweet-spirited, smart and a hard worker who doesn’t quit. With those attributes, she can reach any life-goal she may set, with the Lord Jesus’ help.

Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Alisa Flores.

Student Of The Month April 2008

SARAH GUENTHER

“I wanted to try something new and learn self-defense,” says Sarah. But when she started training with Marc Unger Karate on August 21, 2007, she got more than she bargained for. Now eight months later, Sarah is training to take her Green Belt test this month! In one word, she says the biggest help Karate has been to her is “CONFIDENCE!”

Sarah is 32 years of age and happily married to John, a competitive jockey. Her hobbies are gardening and “spoiling” her “two mutts” who she keeps “very happy.” Sarah holds both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Wisconsin University in animal science. She planned on doing lab research for animals but has found her niche with Kraft Foods of Tulare in their quality control department where she has served for about 4-1/2 years.

Sarah stays in shape, trains hard, doesn’t take herself too seriously, makes friends easily, laughs a lot and keeps our classes light-hearted.

So Sarah, do you have any goals you’d like to achieve with all your newfound confidence? Sarah says, “I guess I can earn my Black Belt in the next five years.” She says that with such confidence that we believe she will!

Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Sarah Guenther.

Student Of The Month March 2008

WYATT DOYLE

The words consistent, steady and regular describe our current Student of the Month.

Wyatt Doyle has been a regular at Marc Unger Karate since he was eight years old. He’s now 12-years old and has been training with us for 3 years and 11 months. Wyatt has made steady progress from White to Green Belt in about one year, Green to Purple Belt in another year and Purple to Brown Belt in about 1-1/2 years. Wyatt is now a First Degree Brown Belt and is gunning for his Junior Black Belt as his next major goal. The way he goes about it, he’ll achieve that goal—and more.

Immediately after his birth, Wyatt’s mom, Jan, took him home from the hospital and placed him on a horse. He has been riding horses ever since. His horse’s name is “Blue.” Wyatt also likes track (the one-mile run) and Physical Education.

Wyatt attends Exeter Baptist Church and has a goal to “go to college at Cal Poly,” where he says, “I’d like to work on cars like my grandpa and my uncle.” Wyatt also enjoys playing the trumpet.

“I like fighting, being around the Karate school, passing my next requirements and working out,” says Wyatt. He recognizes that the most important thing he has learned at Marc Unger Karate is, “to love each other, to love Jesus and to defend.”

Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Wyatt Doyle.

Student Of The Month February 2008

BRIAN LOOMIS

One hot afternoon in the spring of 2007, Brian Loomis was working on a roof. Taking a misstep, he lost his balance and began plummeting toward the edge of the roof. Unable to control his fall, he gave one last jump in order to clear the concrete slab and furniture below and, miraculously, landed on his feet. Sadly, that crash landing resulted in a severe spiral fracture of his right shin along with a lengthy convalescence.

Still rehabilitating his stiff leg, Brian joined Marc Unger Karate on November 30, 2007 at the age of 32. Brian says, Karate has “limbered me up quite a bit [I have] a lot more mobility and a lot less pain…I’ve wanted to do it all my life, [this has been] a lifelong desire since I saw ‘Karate Kid.”” Brian is a testimony that we never have to let go of our childhood dreams. Where there is a will, there is a way.

A solid Christian, Brian believes in himself--with God’s help. He wrestled in Junior High School and played basketball in High School but, like most of us, has been a little more sedentary as an adult. Now he says, “Karate gives me confidence…it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and now I’m doing it.”

Brian currently works as a book fair representative and his wife, Jeannine, teaches at Exeter Union High School. They have three children: Moriah (8), Manny (7) and John (2). Brian recounts that Jeannine, “can tell that my body is more toned in only seven weeks!”

At the time of this writing, Brian has been with us two months and has rapidly progressed through five tests to stand tall at his current ranking as Sixth Degree White Belt—but not for long. Brian’s goal: Black Belt and beyond!

Congratulations to our February 2008 Student of the Month: Brian Loomis.

Student Of The Month January 2008

EMILY KYLE

On the day Emily joined Marc Unger Karate, she barely spoke to any of us. Now, she’s quick to smile, gets along with everyone, is loved by all, has earned her Green Belt and has a goal: someday, she’ll get her Black Belt. You know what? She’ll probably do just that.

Emily is eight years old now. She joined us 16 months ago. She was home schooled from Kindergarten through second grade. Today, she’s a student at New Life Christian School in Lindsay, loving her studies—and the friendships she’s making. That’s perhaps where Karate has helped her most: in the area of socialization. Emily works well with others.

Emily says that her favorite thing about Karate is that she loves to spar with fellow students. Her favorite technique is her side kick, which has been almost unstoppable in her age division as of late. She’s not afraid to get out there and use it either. In fact, she has two Karate trophies—so far. She’s also very stretchy, easily performing the full splits.

Emily’s dad, Dr. David Kyle, is a medical doctor planning on starting his own practice soon. Her mom, Joy, is busy teaching her little sister, Natalie, at home. This is a family with Jesus at the center of their family circle. When she lets her, Emily helps Natalie with her Karate moves. Emily also has a goal of playing the violin. We know she’ll be good at that too. Way to go, Emily!

Congratulations to our January 2008 Student of the Month: Emily Kyle.

Student Of The Month December 2007

ERIC JIMENEZ

Eric loves the futon couch in Mr. Unger’s office. If his parents come to pick him up a little late, he likes to curl up on that couch and daydream. Eric may like the couch but, unlike many other kids, Eric is no couch potato when it’s time to go to work.

Eric joined Marc Unger Karate at age 6 in November of 2005 and worked for 14 months to earn his Green Belt and an additional 10 months to earn his Purple Belt but that’s not all. He gets good grades in 3rd grade at Rocky Hill School and plays soccer, basketball, flag football and his favorite, baseball.

Eric is almost nine years old now and his mom and dad, Manuel and Lauri, are very proud of his time in Karate and his six trophies (so far). Lauri says that Eric’s Karate training has helped him to “pay more attention and …stay on task more” at school. She feels he is “better-disciplined at home.”

Eric’s favorite things about Karate are: easy, short Katas, fighting and the Scrap-Iron tournaments. Eric says an important lesson he has learned is to keep his kicks up high. Eric’s brother, Robbie (11), a Brown Belt, says that Karate has taught Eric to be a better listener because Mr. Unger makes him do pushups when he doesn’t listen.

Congratulations to our December 2007 Student of the Month, Eric Jimenez.

Student Of The Month November 2007

DEVIN "DINO" WHITNEY

Devin is packed full of energy, like a dynamo. His seven months of Karate training help to keep that dynamic energy under control and channeled into positive advancement toward his goal of becoming a Green Belt—and later, a Black Belt. But that’s not entirely how he got his nickname, “Dino.” His favorite animals are dinosaurs and his favorite dinosaur is the T-Rex.

Devin is six years old and is a first grader at Lincoln School in Exeter. He says that his favorite part of school is recess. Maybe that’s where he gets to unleash some of his dynamism? Devin states that he likes Karate because “you learn how to protect yourself.” His favorite part of Karate is “Kata testing.” That’s where Devin performs his latest Katas (choreographed floor routines) for promotion. Devin is very goal oriented and, once set, he pursues his goals with inexorable determination. He’s been doing that at Marc Unger Karate for the past seven months. Two of Devin’s future goals are to “defend our country” by joining the United States Army and later, by becoming “a cop.” Pretty noble goals.

Devin lives in Visalia with his great-grandparents Roy and Gwendal Longbothom. Roy is a US Army veteran of the Pacific Theater of WWII.

Congratulations to our student of the month: Devin “Dino” Whitney.

Student Of The Month October 2007

PAUL "THE ROTWEILLER" NAVARRO & BRANDON "THE DUCK" MALLARD

This honor will be shared by two outstanding students: Paul Navarro and Brandon Mallard. Both received their Black Belts on September 29, 2007.

Paul Navarro came to Marc Unger Karate at the ripe old age of 11. Paul has been a faithful student who rarely misses classes. In fact, Paul usually comes in early and stays late helping to teach other students what he has learned--receiving the "Wolfpack" patch for "action above and beyond the call of duty." Known for his aggressiveness and tenacity in the ring, Paul is affectionately known as "The Rottweiler." Paul has trained continuously in Karate with us for over five years, even during seasons of high school football. Paul works with his dad, Juan, part-time in the construction trades, is a student at Exeter Union High School and exhibits the quality of reliability. Paul's mom, Alva, is a nurse and, like her, Paul cares about people. Paul Navarro knows how to set high goals and achieve them step-by-step. Like a Rottweiler, he never quits. Congratulations to Mr. Paul Navarro as our student of the month for October 2007.

Brandon Mallard began his career in Karate in 1993 at the age of 8-1/2. He worked out with us faithfully for over 3 years and earned his Brown Belt. Due to circumstances beyond his control he had to discontinue his Karate training only to return to us 8 years later! During his absence, Mr. Mallard began serving a six-year stint in the United States Marine Corps. After four of those years, he came back to Marc Unger Karate and asked if he could re-enroll. At the age of 25, he came back into Karate training where he left off, at the rank of Brown Belt. On attaining the rank of Black Belt, Mr. Mallard stated, "To me, the Black Belt is the end of the beginning!" He continues training with the goal of learning all he can and aspires to the ranks of advanced Black Belt. For faithfully serving six years in the USMC and for successfully achieving his Black Belt--the end of his beginning--we congratulate Mr. Brandon Mallard and give him a big OORAH!

Student Of The Month September 2007

UKIAH "THE LIIIVE WIRE" HEASLEY

What's purple, bounces on a trampoline but doesn't need a trampoline to bounce? It's our Student of the Month, Ukiah "The Liiive Wire" Heasley.

Ukiah began his Karate career on December 10, 2004 and has been in constant, and dedicated training for almost three years. He earned the rank of Green Belt on 3-18-06 and Purple Belt on 2-17-07. Currently a Second Degree Purple Belt, Ukiah is training for his Brown Belt test scheduled for 9-29-07--just prior to his 8th birthday!

Ukiah comes in early for his class so he can help other students with their training and is a great role model for our students of any age. He has a great work ethic and understands the need to practice, practice and practice. He always puts out his very best effort!

Ukiah lives this Bible verse: "Whatever your hands find to do, do with [all] your strength" (Ecclesiates 9:10).

Ukiah also exemplifies the character quality of consistency in his schoolwork: he has already earned 5 Conduct Stripes for his A/B report cards and another for signing his friend up with Marc Unger Karate.

His parents, Ed and Bonnie Healsey of Tulare, are very supportive of Ukiah and extremely proud of his accomplishments. Bonnie is one of Marc Unger Karate's most dedicated tournament scorekeepers.

Congratulations to the Marc Unger Karate Student of the Month: Ukiah "The Liiive Wire" Healsey!
